If you're not from the Midwest, you might be a little flabbergasted at the idea of buying a big ass old building, but trust me, after the 2008 market crash, a lot of Midwestern towns had weird old buildings available for dirt cheap. The cost to renovate was too high, the years of deferred maintenance on electrical and plumbing...this place will likely need a lot of work. Luckily, most everyone Mal knows are werewolves who are great for some unskilled labor! I mentioned this in a comment on the last page, but between her and her dad, they'll have enough to buy the building as is for cash, so that also bypasses a lot of the overhead involved with financing and whatnot. Plus, big ol' tax write off by doing it as part of their business, so that's fun.

I do actually know what the big building is going to be used for, and it'll have a few different things going on, but you'll all have to wait to find out closer to the end of this chapter, which is...years away. Lol. Lmao. FML.

Sorry today's page is a little late, but I had to wrangle my new cat from the vet into her new enclosure, which wasn't difficult but it did eat up my morning a little. She's pretty calm, which is wild because I was expecting a cat tornado tbh. She's mildly hissed at me with a little growling. Her sons came to check her out and have now left her alone, and my OG cats don't seem to care either. Who are all these animals who are so nonchalant about a random animal being in the guest room?

If you're wondering how Mal is going to afford a building this big, you have to think back to prices during 2015 lol. Also, assume that her dad will end up probably co-owning this building with her anyway, since they'll be buying it through their business. I was going to try to make it look more dilapidated, but I know this story only has so much space for a werewolf renovation team side story, so only the upstairs is going to need work in the end. As for what the building is going to be used for, please give me your best ideas in the comments! I already know, because it's part of the plot of this chapter, but I want to see what everyone's guesses are :)

In cat-related updates, mama is out of my garage and at the vet today! She's more subdued than I'd have expected, but I think she's a little shocked and a little resigned to her fate. The fact that she didn't freak out more is giving me a bit of hope. She doesn't look like a wild thing, like feral cats do when they're completely bugged out of their mind, she just looks apprehensive. Idk, if you're very familiar with cats, you'll understand what I mean. I get her back tomorrow and then she'll go into a pop up enclosure in the guest room to hunker down until we're either friends or enemies.

I made this cover kind of spontaneously a few weeks ago because I needed new art for a convention banner ASAP, and I like it a lot! I had no other ideas for a chapter cover, and I wanted to show Mal and her wolf side very attached at this point. I spent my comic break watching a lot of tutorials and trying to up my skills. Downside, that means everything takes me longer because now I'm leveling up again. OH WELL. FEELS NICE. The wolf came out better than I hoped, because I had to heavily reference a real wolf growling to get the vibe right. The hot pink highlights remind me of something you'd have airbrushed on the side of a van in the late 70s, and I'll probably never manage to replicate it again. Sometimes, the art makes itself and you just have to roll with it.

Chapter 14 starts next week! I'm off to draw a lot today, because I only managed to do the backgrounds yesterday!

Sorry to disappoint anyone who thought Elias would run Vince up a tree! That's probably later in the evening, but Vincent is much too practical to cuddle in a tree. He'd probably also end up looking for bugs in the dark. And if you're wondering how Elias's car can handle two grown men on the hood, don't worry! I owned a Ford Crown Victoria in high school and college, and they're basically tanks that they sell to the general public. They cannot drive in snow, but they can go 80mph in a few seconds and get about 8 miles per gallon. Horrible car, but I kind of miss it.

Tomorrow starts Chapter 14, so look forward to the chapter cover! And then we'll dive into the chaos of trying to resolve all this stuff before I go crazy lol

If you're wondering why these nerds have fancy camping equipment but not money for a hotel, consider what vacations are available to a family when one of your kids is a werewolf lol. The Walters family balls out on camping, for sure, plus all those years in Boy Scouts helped justify a lot of equipment, too. 

If anyone is wondering, Isle Royale is a small little national park in Michigan that's only accessible by sea plane or a ferry that runs occasionally. I've never been, but I think it would be cool to go one day. It's in Michigan, but it's closer to Canada. It's accessible from a tiny chunk of Minnesota that's basically in Ontario.

Happy Fat Tuesday/Paczki Day/Mardi Gras/Lunar New Year! Whatever you may or may not celebrate! I was delayed posting today due to needing to pick up my yearly pazcki from the local bakery. They're not 100% accurate to what they serve in Poland, but from talking to my Polish friend, I think due to the timeframe of when a lot of Polish immigrants came to the US (especially the Chicago area), a lot of traditional things diverged pretty hard. Like yeah, I could see that what's normal in the Polish diaspora around Chicago would not match what anyone in Poland today thinks is normal, because a lot of the people around here came over 50+ years ago. My dad's grandmother's family is Czech/Bohemian, and that wing of the family came to Chicago in the 1800s, so we don't retain much connection to Eastern Europe. But damn, I love a super fatty Polish donut.

Anyway, for anyone who's unfamiliar with Michigan, it's like, absolutely top tier for camping and outdoors activities. I really want to get up to the Upper Peninsula again, because I've driven through it, but I really missed out on the absolutely baller nature, especially off of Lake Superior. The Pictured Rocks lakeshore has gotten really popular due to Tiktok, I think, but there are some stunning views just about everywhere. There's a newish dark sky park that's only an hour and a half from where I live that I really want to visit when the weather is better, but they only open at night certain days, so it requires some planning.

I promise that Ginger didn't plan to block their makeout sesh on the couch, she just kind of wanted to watch this horrible movie and hoped they wouldn't mind. She was raised in a creepy house in the woods, after all. (And so was Aubrey.)

I made biko just for full legitimacy for this page lol. And also because it looked delicious and I didn't want to pass up an opportunity to make a dessert. I really like it, but I wish the Filipino place near me offered it on the menu or something so I could try a more legit version. I don't have any banana leaves (I could probably get some somewhere in Chicago, but I wasn't going to go out of my way for this experiment), and I can tell that would bring more to the vibe. I also only have the Thai glutinous sweet rice, and I feel like that's maybe not quite the right kind. I've always made it in the microwave to generally pretty good success, because the alternative is steaming it after soaking it for hours, and I don't have time for all that. The short grain Japanese sticky rice I have on hand didn't seem to be the right kind either. Regardless, turned out good! I posted some photos on my Instagram stories, though they're nothing to write home about lol. I'll eat anything that involves rice and coconut milk, frankly.

Also, a quick kitten update, because someone mentioned it yesterday! They're doing well! I found a good home with a friend of a friend for two of the kittens, and last report is that they battle it out for who gets pet first, because this whole litter loves affection. I kept the two grey boy kittens and they're getting along with my cats great and they're possibly the sweetest cats I've ever owned. They really enjoy tipping over my houseplants and dragging all the dirt out onto my carpet, which I'm not thrilled with, but I can manage. The mama is still in my garage. I've got an oil heater in there, so it's a nice temperature, and she plays with her toys and eats catnip and naps in her warm box. I need to catch her, which will be traumatic for everyone, and get her spayed. Hopefully next month when it's warm, because then if she cannot adapt to slowly being introduced to the inside cat life, I can safely let her back outside. I think she'll come around. I plan to keep her in the enclosure I had the kittens in so she has a safe place to learn to be inside and learn to be around me for as long as she needs.

Poor MarMar are sharing their house with not just Elias, but also Ginger and Aubrey, and it's just a little too crammed with people. Elias has been sleeping on the couch since Ginger was liberated, which has been at least two, maybe three months? Marin and Marisa are mostly over trying to force the situation to resolve, because they're old enough to know that Elias needs to move out on his own of his own accord lol

Anyway, we're back to our regular schedule! I've got seven total pages of this side thing, and then the chapter cover, and then we'll dive into Chapter 14 for reals. I know I've said it's the last chapter a lot, just to give everyone time to process that, but assume it'll still take me a few years to finish lol.

Hello again! See, I'm still doing things! The break has been amazing, and thank you everyone for being so chill about it. I know that webcomics live or die by consistency, but I ran out of steam and needed to replenish. I've been enjoying making art in the meantime, and it's giving my brain plenty of time to stew about the last chapter and really bringing everything to a satisfying close. (Minus whatever smaller side stories I do afterwards, but I really need to resolve Tom's whole situation in a way that I think is solid and brings his character arc to an end in a way that makes sense for him and Malaya.) 

Anyway, we're relaunching on February 3rd to mark my 11th anniversary! That'll be a Tuesday, so it works out well. It's a few days late for a full moon, which is on the 1st, but close enough. (The comic originally launched on a full moon.) The first thing will be a 7 page Vincent and Elias side story that I'm currently working on (pages should be up on Patreon as they're finished, but I have it written at least), followed by the Chapter 14 cover and then the chapter will start officially.

Hello again! It's been a minute! I was hoping to post this last week, but this much-needed break has been extra much-needed lately, it seems. Also this took much longer than I thought it would, but I rarely ever have the time to be this indulgent with something. I wanted to kind of reflect everyone's personalities, which means Marisa is arguing with Elias over something (probably very stupid) and Harvey is trying to get Tim to be civilized in public (he won't). 

Like I said on my last post, HTBAW should return late January! I'm not sure if I'll lead with my Elias/Vincent short side comic and then start the chapter, or if I'll have that done earlier in January, but assume that I've slowed down my general life by about 3x my normal productivity, so probably January will be the side comic followed by the start of Chapter 14 when that's done. Chapter 14 is my last planned chapter, though assume it'll probably take about 2 years like this one, and there will be a few breaks in there for sanity, and then probably some side comics after it. I'm not totally peacing out on HTBAW, but I want it to come to a reasonable conclusion before it's dragged on too long, as well.

Last page! Last page! It took until page 1005 to get here, but we made it :D. For reference, this chapter ended up being 177 pages long and took a little over two years to complete. I made the cover for Chapter 13 in September of 2023, so yeah...but it's done! Expect Chapter 14 will be just about as long if not longer. I'm taking a break now that this chapter is done, but I'm not gone, don't worry! I'll be conjuring up a post-chapter artwork of some kind (usually a group shot, since I never have time to do those otherwise), and I have a little side comic idea that I want to make. Expect the next chapter will probably start late January. 

My break isn't much of a break, because I have a lot of housekeeping to do! I'm working with a friend to design a new site with some more features like bookmarking what page you're on and whatnot. If there are any other features you'd like to see, let me know! I'm also going to start uploading everything on Webtoon again, but I need to modify my page sizes so they show up well. I guess they're not into blood and violence, so we'll see what I can get away with on some pages. I'm trying to get into some more conventions for next year (DragonCon, maybe? I have to look into the logistics of that), so I need more merch to sell. I also have a little bit of prep work to do to finish Book 2 so it's ready to print, though again...wtf is up with tariffs and shit? No idea. So I have to also do some price hunting for what I want. 

Pray for me, basically. In a non-religious or religious way of your choosing.

As for my kittens, I still have two of them! They're kind of attached, and I think I'd have happier cats if I keep them together, since one is still shy and kind of weird (he takes after his mom, I can tell), so I'll probably just keep them. I already have three cats, but my cat Rudy is clearly on the decline, so having five cats (plus a garage cat for the winter) will turn into having four cats before long regardless. I'm keeping Rudy alive as long as I can, but he's just...old lol.

Kitten update! (I'll just make this a feature, I guess.) Two of them are going home today! Things got very exciting on Monday because they all got out of their fucking enclosure while I was still in London, and I had to call in some reinforcements to capture them from my garage loft. My garage needed a deep clean this morning, because I think between them and their mom, there was a lot of stress peeing. I'm hoping that with this break, I can get up in my garage loft and organize shit a little better, and that will help me with the issue of mama cat trying to live up there permanently. I need to catch her and get her spayed still.

Only one page this week! I'm in London until early next week, so there will be one page a week until the end of this chapter (which SHOULD be page 1005, but I haven't drawn it yet, so don't hold me to that). I'll keep an eye on comments, but they're 6 hours ahead of my normal time zone, so it'll be sporadic :)

Kitten update! (I'll just make this a feature, I guess.) Since this page is going up on Wednesday, that means they're at the vet and I'm probably freaking out from another country, but it'll be fine. I can't help but worry because they're so slowly growing to trust me. So far, I have one little grey boy kitten who lets me give him belly rubs, and I've put two of them on my lap to pet them for awhile with good results. The little female calico was not into that idea, but I'll try again when she's less wound up. The mom cat continues to watch me with her goofy ass blank stare, but she's eating and using the litter box and seems otherwise comfortable, so I guess we're okay for now.

I have good and bad news! The good news is that I ended up adding an extra page to this chapter! The bad news is that I'm visiting friends in London all next week and I won't be around, so I'm going to have to space out my pages more so I don't have to skip a week! So there will be one page next Wednesday, one page the week after that, and probably one page after that...but I might be able to sneak in another illustration for the end of the chapter that week. If not, I'll post it the next week. Theoretically, there will be something every week of October, at least lol. Then, after that, I need a little break! I anticipate making a side comic that I've had in mind for Elias and Vincent for awhile that will tie into Malaya's real estate goals, and then Chapter 14 will return sometime after New Year. I keep saying it's the last chapter, but please don't worry, it'll still take 2+ years to finish lol

Kitten update! I've found a few potential homes that seem very gung ho for a kitten through friends and family who I trust, and I think I can pressure my neighbor to take one lol. So I should be good! Fingers crossed! My friend and her mom are taking them to get fixed while I'm out of the country (it just worked out that her mom's vet hookup only has time that week) and then they can all get vetted finally and off to new homes! They're getting lanky and big, very teenage-looking cats. They're in a new flat enclosure that'll be good for them to recover from surgery, though they have an easier time getting away from me now, so it's harder to convince them to let me pet them for a long time. We're getting there, though!

Page 1000! I made it! It took like, 10.5 years, but here we are lol. I'd have a bigger celebration to do, but I'm legit four pages away from the end of this chapter (don't worry, yes all of this will get brought in and wrapped up in the next chapter...we're leaving space for some things to marinate, friends), so I'm powering through and then taking a much needed break! I'm realizing how much longer it takes me to make pages lately, and a lot of that is that I need some extended time of doing nothing so my brain resets. After finishing my animation degree in college, I barely drew anything for four years, so starting this comic was partially a way to force myself to get back into the habit of drawing. Now, I draw almost every day! So, goal achieved for sure. But I need some time to knock off a lot of other projects and focus on my garage full of cats lol.

Kitten update, if you're still invested! I have one kitten who purrs now, and one that'll meow at me. I've socialized them around my dog and they're fine. I've got other people who come by to pet them and feed them and chat at them on a regular rotation, so they're meeting a lot of people and becoming friendlier. I'm hoping to get them fixed very soon, because they're about 10-11 weeks old now. Somewhere around 12 weeks is sort of the lower range of when they can be fixed, and the female kitten could theoretically get pregnant in another month or so, so I'll have to make sure she doesn't!! If you know anyone who lives around Chicago, SW Michigan, or Northern Indiana who would like to adopt one, please let me know! I'm working with a rescue to contract potential adopters, and I'll have them all sterilized and vaccinated/dewormed/tested/etc before being adopted out. Check my instagram for photos!
